First launched by the Danish hearing aid manufacturer Oticon in October 2010, the Acto is offered in a comprehensive range of product formats. There are five products that fall in the ITE (in the ear) classification ranging form the very discreet CIC (completely in the canal) up to the larger and more feature rich ITE Full Shell which occupies the whole of the ear concha. In addition to the ITE suite there is a selection of BTE (behind the ear) hearing aids the smallest of which is the Mini RITE (receiver in the ear) and the largest is a Power version. With such a scope of products there should be an Acto that suits not only your loss but will match your lifestyle and hearing needs.
The Oticon Acto uses the RISE2 chip platform which powers a number of complex sound processing algorithms. There are three that specifically focus on the binaural aspect (this is the use of two hearing aids working in conjunction, therefore similar to a natural ear function) – Binaural Coordination, Binaural Dynamic Feedback and Binaural Synchronisation. In addition there are algorithms to diminish or remove unwanted sounds Cancellation 2 (DFC 2) and TriState Noise Mangement. These algorithms or variations have been used in some significantly more advanced and expensive models so you can be reassured that although the Acto is positioned as an entry level product there is a quality of sound processing that should provide comfortable, natural amplification.
Another feature that used to be the reserve of the highest priced products is wireless compatibility. This is an option within the Acto range (not available on all models due to size restrictions) and enables your hearing aid to be connected to an ever-increasing number of Bluetooth household www.ces. Oticon’s streamer system is known as ConnectLine and is a worthy combination of ease of use and high tech functionality.
The Oticon Acto has been positioned as an entry level product but while the hearing aid manufacturers scrabble for technical superiority within the R&D race, one is increasingly finding very high quality systems at affordable price points. If you are a first time user or nervous of investing considerable sums of money for the top flight hearing aids, then we feel that the Acto could prove to be a wise investment that will return considerable benefit and life improving communication. Should you feel that as good as the Acto may be you may wish to stretch to something a bit better conduct a comparison with its sister family the Acto Pro and extend your choice even further.
