The Siemens Xcel Eclipse 701 is a single product format portfolio – i.e. there is just the one product and one cannot chose from a wide selection of styles, shapes and sizes. There is another Eclipse but that is the 301 which is a lower technical specification. To have a single product does not provide the widest possible target audience and the Eclipse 701 is only really suitable for people with mild to moderate hearing loss, so why have Siemens invested in bringing this product to market?
The Eclipse 701 does have one rather attractive aspect that will justify Siemens’s investment and perhaps will be the key criteria in your hearing aid selection process. It is a very small hearing aid that fits deep inside your ear canal and consequently is very discrete. This discretion is not for all of us though. Not that we do not all desire discretion but as small as it is the 701 will not be suitable for all ear canals. It is not a bespoke build and is not moulded on an impression of your canal but adapts to fit through the use of a soft dome which also ensures that the www.ce is retained in place.
Although the Excel Eclipse is extremely small, Siemens have managed to pack a surprising amount of technology into it. It comes with a 16 band processor that will provide a basis of flexibility to enable very precise programme to a specific loss. Being situated deep in the ear canal does alleviate some of the amplification requirement but the amplification that is provide is done so through a series of complex algorithms that Siemens wrap under the brand of “Soundability”. The concept behind this is to achieve the balance between intelligibility and clarity. The 701 is clearly pitched at those with a marginal loss many of whom may be first time users and therefore have the option of struggling along unless a significant benefit is derived by using a hearing aid.
Surprisingly for a product that is designed to be invisible the Siemens do offer choice of colours. There is a selection of pearl white, dark brown or tan for the body of the aid and the domes are coloured red to signify right ear and blue for the left ear.
The Eclipse is a product that has a clear USP (unique selling point) of discretion but at the same time does deliver a significant package of complex sound processing. If you are very concerned about cosmetics yet want to hear with all the clarity that technology can muster the Excel Eclipse 701 may well be the right product for you.
