Many hearing aids are positioned by the manufacturers to target a significant majority of the hearing impaired population. In order to appeal to as broad a segment as possible they are offered in a variety of different product formats, which typically range from a fully loaded BTE with all the bells and whistles down to a small CIC (completely in the canal) which will share the basic processing platform but invariably does not do everything that the larger formats can offer. This is a standard industry practice to maximise R&D spend and generate broad based appeal. With the iMini 701, Siemens have bucked this trend and this product is a single format, available in just two technology bands. The 701 is the highest technology with its less well endowed 301 as the cheaper alternative.
So what is the iMini 701 all about? In very simplistic terms it is a combination of maximum technology encapsulated in a minimal space. So it is very small and very high tech. Isn’t that what all hearing aids aspire to be? Well, in theory yes but in reality this product is so small that it may create handling difficulties for those whose fingers are not as flexible as they used to be. Small hearing aid use small batteries and require reasonable sized ear canals, so this may not be a product suitable for all but for those seeking a top end, invisible hearing solution then it may well be the one for you.
Having established the essence of the iMini 701 what is the technology inside it? The product is powered by a 16 channel sound processor providing a high degree of flexibility to precisely match our specific loss and fast sound processing across a wide array of algorithms.
The algorithms include a number that combat unwanted noise such as feedback, microphone wind noise and a number that improve the quality and clarity of the desired sounds. Within the first category there is the ultra-fast Feedback Stopper and e-Windscreen and the latter includes SoundBrilliance and SoundSmoothing. These are just names that make the technological wizardry that happens behind the scenes both intelligible and marketable but they are indicative of a highly complex sound processing which should result is a comfortable, natural sound.
Siemens are a high quality manufacturer and a world leading supplier of hearing aids so while we would always advise caution in the selection of such a small www.ce, the iMini is loaded with technology which could be the solution for the more discerning listener. So as with all CIC www.ces, proceed with caution but for the right candidate this could be the perfect marriage of size and science.
