Description

Siemens Life 101 is the entry level technology of a range of BTE (behind the ear) hearing aids that use the Siemens Life thin tube system to deliver sound from a small discreet case that sits behind the ear via a very narrow tube into the ear canal. The Life has sister products with different product formats such as ITE (in the ear) and RIC (receiver in the canal) that use the same technology but are marketed under separate names. This is how Siemens segment their products whereas others use names to denote a technology and group formats under a common name. Hearing aid terminology can be confusing so let’s just focus on the neat, small and discreet BTE.

The Life 101 is offered in a wide choice of colours ranging from those designed to be seen, to the more muted ones intended to blend with your skin or hair colour. The product itself is very small so whatever colour you do select it is likely to be difficult to spot and more importantly comfortable. BTE hearing aids may be rejected by some users as they do sit “behind the ear” but they have many advantages over those that are placed within the ear or ear canal. BTE products tend to be more reliable, have a longer battery life, can often have greater functionality and are significantly easier to handle. So the format has much to recommend it – what about the technology?

The Life 101 is an entry level specification and priced to reflect that, so if you have a difficult loss or intend to use your hearing aids primarily in noisy environments such as pubs, restaurants and with speakers muffled by background noise it is probably better that you examine alternative products. The Life has three higher specifications than the 101. The Life 101 is powered by a six channel processor and does have the key algorithms of speech and noise management, feedback stopper and e-windscreen, so it is not without features. Within their marketing literature, Siemens recommend that the Life 101 is really best used by those with a fairly sedentary lifestyle or to amplify one-to-one speech in quiet situations. This is an honest reflection of the technology used and should be a good guide as to whether this is suitable for you.

The Life is a sensible format and coming from the Siemens stable one can be confident of the quality behind the product. Our view is that if you require occasional amplification or perhaps if this is your first venture in to hearing aids, this may be a good choice but take time to ensure it has the functionality that you may need not only now but for the next few years to come.
