Starkey say about the Wi series that these wireless hearing aids “sound like nothing you have heard before” which we feel is marketing hype gone mad. Surely the intention is to enable people to hear what they have had before and recover their sense of hearing back to being as close as possible as it used to be! Let’s park their marketing and look at the products.
The Wi series is a system of wireless enabled hearing aids available at three different technology levels, the i110 being the premium level, followed by the i90 and i70. Each level can be delivered in five different product formats ranging from the “virtually invisible” Completely-In-The-Canal CIC, with three different concha hearing aids – ITC, Half Shell and Full Shell and two Receiver-In-The-Canal variants, a standard and an “Absolute Power” version. So there is plenty of choice and for the cosmetically minded there is also a fairly decent colour selection for the RIC portfolio.
This multiple technology and product format structure is common place across the industry, so no surprises there but what is inside the top end i110?
The Wi i110 is powered by a 16 channel processor which will provide a very flexible shape to allow the hearing aid audiologist to very closely match your specific loss. In terms of absolute numbers, 16 channels is not the pinnacle of channels but it is certainly indicative of an advanced processor to provide a more than adequate engine to this top end technology.
Starkey differentiate the three technology levels i110, i90 and i70 by a quite simplistic lifestyle chart and it will be no surprise that in their view the top level is suitable for all environments including difficult crowds, car, theatre etc. This is done by a number of sound processing algorithms working together to clean, focus and amplify the required sound input.
Two of the more interesting algorithms are the Voice iQ2 and InVision Directionality. These two address the challenge of speech in noise that is the bane of all who suffer from hearing impairment. If they work as well as Starkey state then we feel that the i110 is a significant step towards delivering hearing satisfaction.
As well as a fast, multi-band processor working in conjunction with complex algorithms, the essence of the Wi series is their wireless compatibility. Wireless enabled hearing aids are by no means unique to Starkey but they have provided a good looking and well thought out wireless accessories under their SurfLink brand. These streamers and remotes can link your hearing directly to Bluetooth enabled household www.ces such as MP3 players, mobile phones, television and allow you to listen through your hearing aids at the volume you require while others can enjoy the same experience without the compromise of overly loud sounds.
There is a lot to commend the Starkey Wi Series i110 and we strongly recommend that you take the opportunity to discuss this premium product with a qualified hearing aid audiologist.
